Nevertheless, for a short period of time in late 1943 and early 1944 Wingate’s ideas formed a competing strategic idea for the defeat of the Japanese in Burma. 13 Wingate had become fixated with the idea that his Chindit force alone would bring about the defeat of the Japanese in Burma, going so far as to doubt whether conventional forces even had a role in a future campaign.

During the pursuit to the Chindwin Slim had been exercised about how he could engage and defeat General Kimura Heitar – commander of the Burma Area Army – in open battle once the Chindwin had been breached.
