Concentrate on the author’s goal, tone, and point of view. Do not read stubbornly; you do not need to understand or follow everything; some (even many) details may escape you—focus on the big picture! Always return to the passage when multiple-choice questions refer you to specific lines. Always read around the lines; the context of the lines is almost always critical in determining the correct answer.

THE BIG PICTURE Some people may advise you to read the questions that pertain to the passage before you read the passage. Do NOT take that advice! If you do this, you run the risk of automatically filtering your reading through the lens of a particular question or questions. You might ignore certain important aspects of the paragraph in your search for the answer to the questions you read.
