My experience in working with a number of companies, however, is that it’s a crapshoot as to whether strategic direction gets translated below the business unit level. Sometimes, as with strategic direction, company values haven’t been cascaded throughout the company.

If that happened, the stock price could fall. If either Girls Toys or Games didn’t meet their numbers, you could see how Hasbro could have under-performed. But more importantly, you can see how companies will perform well if all of the commitments of all the business lines and divisions and departments are known throughout the organization and employees understand how their work interrelates to the other parts of the company. These three problems are solvable, and the last one is easily solved by simply setting good performance expectations that are cascaded from the company’s strategic direction.

How do you know how engaged your employees are? Be vigilant on using the right measure. Complicated Measures Sometimes a complicated situation needs a complicated assessment. When you’re doing something highly sophisticated, you may need a sophisticated measure to give you insight. Take the example above: employee engagement. You may shy away from using this measure if you don’t have past survey results to compare to because you can’t measure improvement. Maybe your first-year measure needs to be survey participation and not improvement in engagement, and you can make intelligent inferences from that less-than-ideal information the first year.
